I wrote a simple diary entry into ChatGPT, and it fixed me a beautiful retrospective essay on life.

It’s too beautiful to not share, especially the last paragraph. This entry comes after my close family had finished a surgery, and I retrospect the days spending more time with family in the hospital room. The memory was so precious, yet I couldn’t put it to words. I thank AI technology for transforming this into an elegant written memory.

I beg your pardon as this might come across as another introspective musing, but after a period of contemplation during my shower, I felt a strong urge to share these thoughts. It’s a rarity for me to delve too deeply into personal matters, but consider this as an attempt at self-reflection that I felt compelled to document.

I have to admit, the time I spent this afternoon, and these recent days with my parents in the hospital room, was perhaps the most genuine family interaction I’ve experienced in years, especially considering they’ve been divorced for a decade.

Understanding my father’s viewpoints, perhaps a result of my own maturation, has allowed me to appreciate his perspective more deeply. It seems that he, too, managed to put aside his ego and emotional tendencies, refraining from critiquing every minor detail in sight.

Sharing meals with my mother on the eve of her surgery led to revelations about my grandparents. My grandfather, an accountant, found solace in crafting wooden furniture, while my grandmother dedicated her life to teaching. They both navigated the challenges of war-time life. Hearing my mother recall these stories, like the harrowing tales of desperation during the Japanese occupation where people were forced to unthinkable extremes, was an enlightening experience.

Taken together, these sincere and unguarded conversations gave me a glimpse into their inner world, shedding light on our shared history, and a deeper understanding of my own identity.

These moments of quality interaction are so precious. I am filled with gratitude for these conversations and the opportunity to understand them on a deeper level.

In the end, it’s clear that the essence of family lies in its unwavering presence. While friendships can change, family is the constant, the inevitable homecoming. Regardless of wealth or poverty, sickness or health, virtues or vices, the familial bond endures — bound by either blood or love, or perhaps both.
